Zlatko Kaučič – Drums, percussion
Tomaž Grom – Double bass, electronics, video
koprodukcija Sajeta & Zavod Sploh
After two decades, ‘The ear is the shadow of the eye’ is an excellent and inspirational meeting and at the same time – collision of Zaltko Kaučič and Tomaž Grom. The album title tries to, or so it seems, to again ask the naive childhood question: ‘Would you rather be deaf or blind?’ And it is truly like that, when listeners come upon this music, intensively present in its randomness, openness, ephemerality. Full of gesticulation, effort and even sweat. All of a sudden matter puts equal strain on the ear and the eye.
The programme contains a random mixture of sounds from both albums by Zlatko and Tomaž.
The torn folklore of memory (2021)
Each in our own community
We keep our distance
Shaken from context
With a hole in the sock
Not every cloud is a
Firm hand
‘Zlatko Kaučič fled across the border in the early 70s, recorded and performed in Italy, collaborated with the Swiss musical cooperative in Switzerland with Radu Malfatti among others. He moved to Barcelona in 1976 and started performing at clubs and festivals as a soloist and together with other musicians, Steve Lacy being just one of them. From 1981 to 1983 Zlatko taught drums at the Taller de musicos jazz school in Barcelona. From 1984, when he moved to Amsterdam, he became a part of the extremely powerful local impro scene and established himself as a composer in the field of performance and dance art. After 1991 he settled in Slovenia again and embarked on an extremely fruitful creative journey’
Luka Zagoričnik at the release of ‘The ear is the shadow of the eye’
Tomaž Grom perceives music as a form of communication, not as an aesthetic pleasure. He searches for reasons to make music. He is uncompromisingly poking into the contemporary social space. Music for him is exploration, unanswered questions, the flow of thoughts, uncertain situations. Composition is improvisation. And improvisation gives him enough space to wander around, make mistakes, get lost and come up with devious solutions.
