This lecture and workshop on field recording are intended for everyone, both those familiar and unfamiliar with the subject. The theoretical part will focus on discussing the information conveyed by field recordings and the various types of sound effects that influence the listener. Microphone techniques and recording strategies used for field recording will be demonstrated, as well as insights into special tools that enable the sonification of, for example, electromagnetic waves.
In the practical part, we will use modern equipment for both spatial sound and mobile devices and apps for recording. We will create sound recordings that include natural sounds and many random elements derived from the soundscape itself. This will be followed by the selection, editing of recordings, filtering, and the use of sonograms to remove noise and disturbing elements.
The workshop is led by Simon Šerc and Martina Testen, experienced and internationally recognized audio-visual artists whose works have been featured in media such as The Guardian, BBC Radio, and The Wire. Their sound albums have also been selected among the best field recording albums.
Workshop fee: 15€
Recommended equipment: recording device (portable recorder, mobile phone…), laptop, headphones.
