MATS GUSTAFSSON solo sax / (Swe)

Mats Gustafsson, no doubt one of the biggest names of contemporary jazz scene, was born in 1964 in Umeå, north Sweden. In his successful career, he was active in numerous projects either as composer and musician but mostly as enthusiastic improviser. He shared stages all over the world with names such as Peter Brötzmann, Sonic Youth, Merzbow, Jim O´Rourke, Barry Guy, Otomo Yoshihide, Yoshimi and Ken Vandermark, to name just the biggest. He is currently mostly playing in the following projects: The Thing, Sonore, FIRE!, Gush, Boots Brown, Swedish Azz in Nash Kontroll, and occasionally with Barry Guy New Orchestra and Peter Brötzmann Chicago Tentet. If we want to be even duller with these formal enumerations, here are some data: 1,800 concerts and more than 200 albums all over the world (Europe, North and South America, Australia, Africa and Asia as well). But Gustafsson’s poetics of improvised music goes beyond jazz; it touches the contemporary dance, theatre, poetry and other contemporary arts. Along with the aforementioned, Mats also takes care of production and organization of various festivals and is a successful owner of the Slottet, OlofBright Editions, and Blue Tower Records labels.
For his first time at Sajeta, he will perform as a solo artist, which is the best way for this musical genius to express his improvisational and dynamical essence in the most straightforward fashion.
